Financing for Development Review

As part of its commitment to pursue financing issues in support of the MDGs, SWP led the civil society review of the outcomes of the UN-sponsored High Level International Conference on Financing for Development held five years ago in Monterrey, Mexico.

One of the most comprehensive scale of CSO participation in a United Nations conference was during the Financing for Development Summit in 2002 in Monterrey, Mexico under the initiative of Social Watch Philippines.  SWP led the process in crafting a broad-based consensus among Philippine civil society around challenges to, and policy recommendation for, increasing financing for social development at both country and international level.

SWP initiated the civil society process in preparation for the international review conference on FfD held in Doha, Qatar.  A series of roundtable discussion which culminated in a national consultation of CSOs was organized by SWP in 2007. In partnership with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), SWP convened an Asian regional meeting of CSOs in May 2008 to discuss the major issues in FfD. The process enabled CSOs in identifying key development and financing issues towards crafting a regional agenda for the Doha conference. Moreover, the meeting also facilitated the more meaningful contributions of CSOs to the official positions of their respective governments.
