Social Developments and MDGs

Breaking Through to Sustainability
Post 2015 Development Agenda

We ask ourselves if this World is what we dreamed of 20 years ago. What on earth happened for the last 20 years. We are now facing deficits and mysteries in development that could not be solved by any development strategy.
  • First sorrowful mystery of development: As the economy grows, exclusion and inclusion happens at the same time.
  • Second sorrowful mystery of development: The widening gap between the richest and the poorest.
  • Third sorrowful mystery of development: As economy grows, the environment is being destroyed. Yet, the environment should be the foundation of development
But despite the MDGs and all the accompanying reports on development andgrowth, the number of people living in poverty and hunger rapidly increased; the gap betweenthe rich and the poor is wider than ever; while perpetrators of crimes against Mother Earthbecame richer.

Many are asking: why, despite all the poverty alleviation strategies, there are still 1.9 billion people in the world who were “left-behind" in extreme poverty? What went wrong?

The answer is staring at us right in the eye: Those “left-behinds” – the hungry, illiterate, uneducated, unhealthy, sick, jobless, homeless and landless – were already leftbehind right from the formulation of goals and targets of the MDGs.

Let us not do it again with the Post 2015 Development Framework.
